Lincoln - LoganPower Improvements

Appalachian Power and its affiliate, West Virginia Transmission Co., plan to strengthen electric reliability in southern West Virginia by making significant upgrades to the transmission system serving customers in Lincoln and Logan counties.

The Lincoln - Logan Power Improvements project includes building approximately 24 miles of new transmission line, two new substations and retiring about 17 miles of aging transmission line. The work will reduce the likelihood of extended outages by providing the region with a secondary power source.

Project Updates

03/24/2023: Crews plan to begin removing 17 miles of transmission line between the Darrah and Sheridan substations in April and conclude by late summer. Crews plan to:

Begin the removal near the Darrah Substation and continue southeast to the Sheridan Substation
Remove most of the transmission line using helicopters
Use trucks and ground equipment for removal in some areas

08/17/2021: Construction is currently on hold. Crews plan to begin access road construction and tree clearing between Sheridan and Midkiff substations this October. Once Sheridan-Midkiff is complete, crews plan to begin work from Midkiff to Stone Branch substations. All work is expected to conclude by the beginning of 2024.

11/27/2020: Crews are currently conducting tree clearing activities and access road construction. Transmission line construction is expected to begin this fall at the Sheridan Substation. The portion of line traveling south from the Sheridan Substation to the Midkiff Substation is expected to be in service by Summer 2021. Crews expect to complete all construction by the end of 2021.

10/29/2019: Crews continue clearing trees, building access roads, and construction of the new transmission line and Sheridan Substation. The project is expected to conclude by the summer of 2021.

03/14/2019: Crews are scheduled to clear trees and construct the Sheridan Substation this month. Construction of the transmission line will begin later this summer. Construction at other substations will begin this fall. The project is expected to conclude by the summer of 2021.

10/09/2017: Appalachian Power has determined a proposed line route for the Lincoln - Logan Power Improvements project. The route was determined following two informational open houses held this summer. Appalachian Power right-of-way representatives from O.R. Colan will start the process of reaching out to directly involved landowners to discuss upcoming activities.

8/03/2017: Appalachian Power held an open house at Chapmanville Regional High School to introduce study segments, answer questions related to the project and gather feedback from the community.
