Transmission is a critical part of the national electricity grid, helping ensure the reliable delivery of energy that is vital for life today. Transmission infrastructure must be replaced as it reaches the end of its physical capabilities. Investing in transmission system upgrades can lead to multiple benefits:
- Reliability: Since AEP prioritizes its investments based on equipment condition, performance and risk, customers will see an immediate improvement in electric service reliability. This means reduced customer outages and outage durations. About 47 percent of all transmission-caused outages will be eliminated by current and planned projects.
- Resilience: Each new or replacement facility uses modern engineering and safety standards with built-in resilience and new technology to withstand severe weather, security threats and other risks.
- Efficiency: New transmission lines are, on average, 55 percent more energy efficient than those that are being replaced.
- Economic activity: The construction of transmission projects causes a boost in economic activity, which can help attract new businesses and provide income to local communities with tax revenue. A study conducted of transmission investment across AEP’s footprint shows the company sourced over 70 percent of goods and services from within its 11-state service territory between 2017-2019, resulting in approximately $1.41 of economic activity for every $1 invested.
