Independence Area Project

Appalachian Power representatives plan to upgrade the power grid in southwest Virginia by making improvements to the transmission infrastructure. The Independence Area Project provides the area with a new substation and a new electrical source to provide continued reliable electric service. Company representatives are completing environmental studies and working with impacted landowners. Construction is expected to begin fall 2025.
