East LawtonTransmission Improvements Project

Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) representatives plan to upgrade the electric transmission system in the east Lawton area. Crews plan to begin construction in fall 2022 and conclude by late 2023.

This project involves rebuilding about 10 miles of power line with steel single-pole structures, replacing about 6 miles of wire and upgrading area substations to increase electric reliability for customers.

Project Updates

Early 2023: PSO representatives expect to begin pre-construction activities the week of Jan. 30. This work includes right-of-way clearing and installation of gates and culverts. The gates and culverts allow PSO representatives to safely access areas within the company’s easements. This work might involve removing fences, trees and other obstructions from the right-of-way area where necessary. Transmision line construction will begin immediately after those activities conclude. PSO representatives expect crews to work until late spring, when they will observe a mandatory stoppage due to peak power demand in the summer months. Crews will resume work in early fall and complete the project by the end of the year. Coates Field Service, Inc., serves as PSO's right-of-way representative on this project, and Coates agents will remain in contact with landowners throughout the construction process.

Fall 2022: As PSO representatives prepare to rebuild the line, crews plan to begin clearing right-of-way access and installing gates and culverts in mid-October on select properties along the power line route. The gates and culverts allow PSO representatives to safely access areas within the company’s easements. This work might involve removing fences, trees and other obstructions from the right-of-way area where necessary.

Crews plan to start rebuilding the transmission line in late October immediately following the installation of gates and culverts. Transmission line construction crews plan to work generally from the east to the west, starting by the Lawton Eastside Substation and working toward the Fort Sill Substation. PSO representatives expect construction to last from this fall through spring 2023, then pause for summer 2023. Construction will resume in early fall 2023 and finish in late 2023.

Summer 2022: PSO representatives hosted an in-person open house in Lawton at MacArthur Middle School on Aug. 2 for affected members of the public to learn more about the project from project team members.

Spring 2022: At the start of 2022, PSO crews performed work along a section of line in east Lawton that required putting distribution lines underground. That work is expected to conclude this spring. As of April 2022, PSO representatives expect transmission line construction to begin in October, with pre-construction activities starting in September.
