Kentucky Power and Appalachian Power representatives plan to increase electric reliability by making transmission line upgrades in Pike County, Kentucky and Mingo County, West Virginia.
Crews plan to begin construction in fall 2027 and conclude by spring 2029.
September 1, 2026: Following a project announcement and open house in August 2026, company representatives continue to evaluate options for a proposed line route. We are committed to keeping you informed throughout this process and plan to provide updates as soon as they're available.
July 30, 2026: Appalachian Power and Kentucky Power invites community members and landowners in the project area to an in-person open house to speak with project members to learn more. There is no formal presentation, so landowners can attend at any time at a location most convenient to them.

The project primarily involves the use of steel H-Frames and some monopole structures.

Substations serve as electrical intersections directing the flow of electricity and either decrease or increase voltage levels for transport. Substations transform 69-kV and 138-kV electricity into lower distribution level voltages such as 34.5-kV, 12-kV, or 7.2-kV.
