Midway - South ChristiansburgTransmission line Rebuild Project
Appalachian Power representatives plan to upgrade the local power grid in the town of Christiansburg and Montgomery County, Virginia. The Midway – South Christiansburg Transmission Line Rebuild Project involves rebuilding approximately 4 miles of 69-kilovolt (kV) electric transmission line, building approximately a half-mile of 69-kV transmission line, retiring approximately a half-mile of 69-kV transmission line and upgrading four substations. Construction begins in late 2026 and concludes in late 2028.
Project Updates
Early 2025: Following a project announcement and open house in spring 2024, Appalachian Power representatives continue to evaluate options for a proposed line route. We are committed to keeping you informed throughout this process and plan to provide updates as soon as they’re available.
June 26, 2024: Appalachian Power representatives are working to determine a proposed line route. The project team is currently reviewing input from landowners.
May 14, 2024: Appalachian Power invites community members and landowners in the project area to an in-person open house June 4, 2024 from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. Montgomery Museum of Art & History 4 East Main St. in Christiansburg.

Structures
Most of the existing line consists of wooden poles. Crews plan to rebuild the line using a majority of steel single-pole structures. At select points, crews plan to use concrete single-pole structures. Proposed structures are an average of 20 feet taller than the existing structures.
