Allen - Maddox Creek345 kV Transmission Line Rebuild

AEP Ohio and Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) representatives plan to upgrade the transmission system between Fort Wayne, Indiana and Van Wert, Ohio through the Allen-Maddox Creek 345 kV Transmission Line Rebuild.

The project involves:

  • Rebuilding about 20 miles of 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission line between Allen Substation off East Tillman Road in Fort Wayne and RP Mone Substation off Shaner Road in Tully Township.
  • Rebuilding about 10 miles of 345-kV transmission line between RP Mone Substation and Maddox Creek Substation off Fife Road in Van Wert. This portion of the project requires Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) approval.

The project benefits include:

  • Improving the electric system. Replacing deteriorating equipment and power lines with new, modern technology strengthens the electric system and helps prevent potential overloads on transmission equipment.
  • Ensuring reliable power. Upgrading transmission equipment supports the area's need for reliable power by improving operational efficiency and reducing the chances of needing equipment repairs.

These upgrades are mandated by PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organization that ensures compliance with federal requirements.

Crews plan to rebuild most of the power line within or near the existing right-of-way corridor. This may involve updating or supplementing current easements to ensure the safe construction, operation and maintenance of the line.
