Benton Harbor - Fair PlainTransmission Line Rebuild Project
Indiana Michigan Power representatives plan to upgrade the electric transmission network serving customers in the cities of Benton Harbor and Fair Plain in southwestern Michigan. The project involves:
- Updating approximately 7 miles of 34.5 kV transmission line to 69 kV standards
- Upgrading equipment at Pearl Street Substation
The project increases electric reliability in the area by updating the local transmission infrastructure to modern standards. Company representatives plan to rebuild some sections of the power line in the existing right-of-way, which could require updating or supplementing current easements. Other sections of the project include re-routes that require new easements.
Project Updates
Spring 2025: Since the final line route was selected in summer 2021, I&M representatives have been performing field activities to support the engineering and design of the line. As the project has progressed, we found the need to adjust the originally proposed timeline. Company officials now expect construction to begin early 2026 and conclude towards the end of the year.
