Kalamazoo - VicksburgTransmission Line Rebuild Project

Indiana Michigan Power representatives plan power grid upgrades to improve electric reliability and efficiency for customers in Kalamazoo County.

The Kalamazoo - Vicksburg Transmission Line Rebuild Project includes rebuilding about 5 miles of power line between Kalamazoo Substation on South 14th Street and Vicksburg Substation on Draper Street.

The project improves the local electric transmission system by replacing aging structures and wires installed in the 1970s with modern equipment. The existing line has had eight outages since 2015 and is at the age where replacement is necessary. These upgrades improve line performance, reduce maintenance needs and increase reliability.

Company representatives plan to rebuild the line in or near its current location, which may require obtaining new or updating existing property easements – defined land rights that property owners grant the utility to allow for the safe construction, operation and maintenance of the power line. While I&M crews expect to rebuild most of the line in or near its current location, the project team has identified two possible options for a short segment near the eastern end of the project area. 

Crews expect construction to begin summer 2027 and conclude by summer 2028.

Spring 2026: Field crews plan to begin conducting surveys on properties in the project area starting in April. Contract Land Staff (CLS), serving as I&M’s right‑of‑way agent for the project, will contact landowners about upcoming field activities and any easements that may be required. During this work, landowners may notice survey crews and clearly marked vehicles gathering environmental information to support the project.
