Wire Mill Substation and ExtensionProject
The Wire Mill Substation and Extension Project involves:
- Building Wire Mill Substation located near the intersection of East 5th Street and South Shunk Street
- Building .25 miles of 69-kilovolt transmission line connecting Wire Mill Substation to an existing transmission line near the intersection of East 4th Street and South Shunk Street
- Retiring Anaconda Substation near the intersection of East 8th Street and South Shunk Street
The existing substation was originally built in the 1950s with wood support structures that are deteriorating. It has also experienced frequent outages in recent years. Building the new substation improves electric service reliability for customers, reduces frequent equipment maintenance and the number of temporary power outages.
Project Updates
- Early 2025: As the project progresses, I&M representatives continue to work on the design and engineering of the upgrade to the power grid. As a result, the project timeline has shifted. Company representatives are currently working to revise the project schedule.
- Actalent Services serves as I&M’s right-of-way representative on this project. Landowners can expect to hear from a right-of-way agent. The utility needs to acquire new easements for the transmission line. Easements are defined land rights that property owners grant the utility to allow for the safe construction, operation and maintenance of the power line.
Timeline
