Lulu - Sorenson Transmission Improvements Project

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) representatives plan power grid upgrades to improve electric reliability for customers in northeastern Indiana and southern Michigan. The Lulu-Sorenson Transmission Improvements Project involves building approximately 75 miles of 765-kilovolt (kV) transmission line between the Sorenson Substation, located near North Gundy Road in Jackson, and extending to a point at the Indiana-Michigan state line. Company representatives also plan to make improvements to the existing Sorenson Substation.

Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), the regional transmission operator who oversees and monitors the power grid across 15 states, mandated this project as part of its long-range plan. The plan focuses on building a 765-kV backbone in the Midwest to carry electricity long distances, strengthening the power grid and improving electric service for customers.

Your community benefits from the project through tax revenues generated from construction, job creation, and an increase in future electric capacity. Additional electric capacity creates an opportunity for growth and community development in eastern Indiana.

Project Updates

Thank you to everyone who attended the September open houses. For those who could not attend, project information remains available through the Virtual Open House. The comment period has been extended through November 13, 2026, providing additional time for landowners to share information with the project team.

To date, no route has been selected. If there are features, improvements, planned uses, or other considerations on your property that you would like the team to understand, you can submit detailed information through:

  • GeoVoice, the interactive mapping tool available at the top of this page.
  • Email IMoutreach@AEPtransmission.com, including maps, photographs, documents, and written comments.
  • Call 877-605-5554, where you can leave a detailed message for the project team.

The project team documents and reviews every submission. Information is shared with the appropriate specialists and helps identify property-specific conditions that may not appear on aerial imagery, public records, or existing mapping resources.

Landowner feedback is one of many factors considered during route evaluation. The team also reviews engineering requirements, environmental constraints, field study results, constructability, cost, and community input. While individual comments do not determine routing decisions or guarantee specific outcomes, they help create a more complete understanding of local conditions and support a more informed evaluation process.
