Kanawha State Forest

    In order to ensure reliable electric service in the Kanawha Valley and the surrounding areas, Appalachian Power must make significant upgrades to the current infrastructure. A portion of the proposed upgrades include construction in the Kanawha State Forest. Construction started in January 2015 and will continue through summer 2017 affecting various areas of the Kanawha State Forest.     • Why is this project being done?

      Power plant retirements in the Kanawha and Ohio River valleys will change the way electric power flows on the electric transmission grid. Upgrades to the system are needed to ensure customers continue to receive reliable and dependable service in the Kanawha Valley and surrounding areas.

    • What is being done in the Kanawha State Forest?

      Appalachian Power is constructing approximately 5.5 miles of 138 kV transmission line consisting of 21 lattice steel towers with a dulled finish to minimize visual impact. Approximately 11 miles of 138kV transmission line and 45 existing structures will be removed.

    • How long will this process take?

      Construction is scheduled to start January 2015. Appalachian Power plans to complete all work in the Kanawha State Forest by summer 2017.

    • What type of construction equipment will be used?

      Expect to see machinery necessary for ground breaking, excavating and tree clearing initially. Once that work is completed, additional equipment used to place structures and string the transmission lines.

    • How will the environment in the Kanawha State Forest be impacted by construction?

      Appalachian Power conducted protected species, cultural and historical studies as required throughout the Kanawha State Forest in order to minimize impact. Wetland delineation and stream identification surveys were also completed to minimized impact to water bodies during construction.

    • How will the construction affect the Kanawha State Forest?

      Some trails are being relocated. Areas of the Kanawha State Forest that are affected by construction will be repaired as close to their original state as possible.

    • What type of safety precautions will be taken for visitors?

      Appalachian Power representatives will install safety barriers and signage in areas where construction is on-going. Flagmen may need to temporarily stop trail users for short periods.
