Kentucky Power and its affiliate, Kentucky Transmission Co., are working to improve the reliability of the energy grid in eastern Kentucky by upgrading the existing transmission infrastructure.
The company’s aging Betsy Layne Substation was built in 1950 and must be replaced to ensure reliable service to the customers in Floyd and Pike counties. The project includes building a substation and less than a mile of 138 kilovolt transmission line. When complete, the company will retire and remove the Betsy Lane Substation.
Construction is expected to start in 2018 and be completed by the end of the year. Estimated budget for the project is $30 million.
Kentucky Power held an open house for this project last fall. The company plans to file for approval with the Kentucky Siting Board this summer.
