Appalachian Power proposes an electric transmission project in McDowell County to ensure adequate and reliable electric service in the local area and to provide for future economic growth. The project generally includes: (i) retirement and removal of 35 miles of existing 88 kV transmission line; (ii) retirement and removal of two existing substations; (iii) construction of three new substations; (iv) improvements at various existing substations; and (v) rebuilding approximately 17 miles of an existing (34.5 kV to 88 kV) transmission line to 138 kV. The Company has existing easements for the rebuild lines; some, however, will need updated or supplemented. The proposed project is shown on the above interactive map and on the below overview map. A photograph of the proposed typical structure is included also. The $80 million project is expected to be completed in 2017.
